The more recent Post-9/11GI Bill, signed into law in June 2008, provides the most comprehensiveeducational benefit package since the original bill was signed into law in1944.

Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits can include:

  • Tuition
  • Living allowances
  • Allowances for books
  • Ability to transfer unused educational benefits to spouses or children

Many Australian education providers are eligible to participate inthe Post-9/11 GI Bill and other VA education benefits programs. Find onehere using theDepartment of Veterans Affairs Institution Search Tool.

Am I eligible? What are my benefits?

To be eligible for the Post-9/11 GI Bill, you must have served at least 90consecutive days on active duty after 10 September 2001. You may also beeligible if you were honourably discharged from active duty for aservice-connected disability after serving 30 continuous days following 10September 2001.

Eligible service members and veterans are provided with:

  • Up to 36 months of education benefits
  • Financial support for school tuition and fees paid directly to your institution
  • A yearly book and supplies stipend paid to you each term
  • A monthly housing allowance (MHA) paid to you
  • The ability to transfer unused educational benefits to spouses or children

Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits are paid on a percentage basis of the maximumamount possible. Between 40-100% of the maximum amount is available tothose who meet the eligibility requirements.* The length of youractive duty service since 11 September 2001 will determine your percentageof available benefits.
